The Bokashi Method
The Bokashi Method
The Bokashi Method, Bokashi is a unique approach to recycling organic waste that utilizes anaerobic fermentation with microorganisms to decompose food scraps. This method is an ideal small-scale composting solution for your countertop, producing nutrient-dense, valuable soil-enhancing materials. It’s a fantastic option for those eco-conscious individuals who want to minimize their environmental footprint and contribute positively to soil regeneration.
Here are a few useful suggestions to get started:
-
- Prepare a bin: Get a bin and bokashi bran, which is a mixture of bacteria and yeast.
- Add food scraps and bran: Chop the scraps if you like, then add them to the bin with the bran. You can use up to two tablespoons of bran for every few inches of food waste.
- Compact and seal: Press the mixture to remove air, then close the lid.
- Drain: Every couple of days, drain the liquid that accumulates, called bokashi tea.
- Prepare a bin: Get a bin and bokashi bran, which is a mixture of bacteria and yeast.
Once complete, you can bury the fermented waste in a hole or add it to a compost pile to finish decomposing.
The Bokashi method produces beneficial microorganisms that can improve soil structure, help soil retain water, and reduce plant diseases
