Signs of a Stressed Tree
Signs of a Stressed Tree
Signs of a Stressed Tree include premature leaf drop, yellowing or browning leaves, a sparse canopy, and early fall colors. Other indicators are wilting, leaf scorch, bark problems like splitting or flaking, reduced growth, and unusual amounts of seed or cone production. Wisconsin’s weather, from heat waves to droughts, can cause many of these issues, making trees vulnerable to pests and diseases.
Leaf and canopy symptoms
- Premature leaf drop: Leaves fall off the tree sooner than they should.
- Wilting or browning leaves: Leaves may appear wilted, curled, or have brown edges (leaf scorch).
- Discoloration: Leaves are not vibrant green and may be yellowing prematurely.
- Sparse or thinning canopy: The tree has fewer leaves than it should, or there are dead branches throughout the crown.
- Small leaves: The leaves on the tree are smaller than normal.
- Early fall colors: The leaves turn color and drop much earlier than usual.
- Failure to leaf out: The tree doesn’t produce leaves in the spring.
Other physical and growth symptoms
- Bark problems: The bark may appear cracked, split, or flaking.
- Reduced growth: There is little new growth, or the tree’s overall vigor is low.
- Leaning: The tree is leaning more than it did before.
- Unusual seed production: The tree produces an excessive number of seeds or cones.
- Fungal growth: Mushrooms or other fungi may appear at the base of the tree.
What to do
- Check for moisture: Wilting leaves can be a sign of drought stress. Check that the tree is getting enough water.
- Inspect for damage: Look for dead branches or physical damage after storms.
- Perform a simple test: Scratch a small twig with a fingernail. If the layer underneath is moist and green, the tree is likely still alive in that spot. If it’s brown and brittle, that part of the tree is likely dead.
- Contact a professional: If you are concerned, an arborist can help diagnose the problem.
