Winter Project 2022-Building Bluebird Houses
We are working on a small project now that winter is here; stop by and see our bluebird houses, which we fashioned from local urban wood. Our Winter project 2022-building bluebird houses is a fun way to utilize the small lumber we have available as well as preserve the life of these beautiful birds.
With their magnificent feathers, insectivorous diets, and beautiful songs, bluebirds make excellent backyard occupants. Any birder can become a bluebird landlord by positioning the perfect bluebird house in the best possible location to draw tenants.
Since all bluebird species are cavity nesters, they require secure environments to rear their young. However, because they lack assertiveness, more aggressive species can easily drive bluebirds from desirable breeding locations. Invasive species like European starlings and house sparrows can readily take over bluebirds’ nesting sites by occupying them. Brown-headed cowbirds have been known to brood parasitize bluebirds, and their young can suffocate bluebird hatchlings and prevent them from receiving enough food and care. The eastern bluebird needs many natural cavities for viable nests, but ongoing human development has eliminated many of those cavities, especially in the eastern bluebird’s habitat. The predicament of bluebird still faces difficulties. Their dwindling numbers are a result of recent frigid winters and their susceptibility to predation, both of which make suitable birdhouses even more important.
Installing a bluebird home on your property has many benefits, including aesthetics and opportunities to interact with wildlife, but its main benefit is preserving this lovely species.
