What is a Gall?
What is a Gall? A gall on a tree is an unusual growth or swelling, often a bump or tumor, that develops on a tree’s leaves, twigs, or branches. These growths are typically caused by an organism like an insect, mite, fungus, or bacteria, and are a result of the tree’s own tissue being manipulated by the gall-inducing organism.

-
Gall Formation:
Galls are formed as a response to the presence of a gall-inducing organism, which can be insects, mites, fungi, or bacteria.
-
Purpose of Galls:
The gall-inducing organism uses the gall as a place to live, feed, and develop. The gall can provide protection for the organism and a source of nourishment.

Types of Galls:
There are many different types of galls, each with its own specific shape, size, and color. For example, oak apple galls on oak trees are caused by wasps, while ash flower galls on ash trees are caused by mites.
-
Effect on Trees:
While galls can be unsightly and disfigure a tree, they rarely pose a serious threat to its health or vigor. In some cases, galls can cause twig mortality or reduce fruit production, but this is not always the case.

Management:In most cases, galls do not require treatment and while they can be unsightly, they usually don’t harm the tree’s health. In most cases, removing them is not necessary, as they are a natural part of the tree’s response to the infestation and often fall off naturally when the pest inside matures. However, for twig galls, you can prune them off before the insects inside emerge, or for citrus galls, you can try white spray. However, if galls are causing significant damage or are unsightly, they can be removed by pruning or other methodFeel free to reach out to Johnson Ops Tree Care if you have any questions about your trees.
