Generally speaking, birds are a nice addition to a landscape, but not while you’re sowing grass seed. How to Deter Birds from Eating Grass Seed
Rich nutrient grass seed is a favorite food of birds. Unfortunately, if birds eat the seed, there will be no benefit to planting your lawn.Still, there are a few steps you can do to prevent birds from consuming your grass seed.
The majority of birds forage for food on the ground. In general, they won’t delve too far into the ground. You can prevent birds from accessing your grass seed by sowing it at least half an inch deep. The chance of your grass seed being eaten by birds will decrease if you plant it deeper in the soil.
Apply a thin but complete coating of pine needles or straw to your lawn once you’ve seeded it with fresh grass. Your grass seed will be hidden by the pine needles or straw, making it less likely for birds to find it. This will deter birds from eating it.
Although it requires a little more work than using pine needles or straw, covering your freshly planted grass seed with a net will keep birds away from it. Netting material specifically made for this purpose is sold by the majority of gardening stores and plant nurseries. You can cover your freshly seeded lawn with netting to keep birds away from it. It is made of plastic mesh
If you combine your grass seed with fertilizer before sowing it, birds are less likely to consume it. Many times, fertilizer contains substances that are poisonous to birds and other animals yet safe, or even advantageous, for plants. Birds are aware of fertilizer, and they will typically stay away from it.
There’s always the chance to scare the birds out of your yard. For example, hanging a wind chime from a nearby tree branch may frighten off birds. The wind chimes will discourage birds from eating your grass seed by creating a metal-on-metal sound.
Installing a bird feeder could be an easy way to prevent birds from consuming your grass seed. if you see birds getting together in a specific area in your yard place a bird feeder in that spot on your lawn. The birds will avoid your grass seed if they have an easy-to-get-to food supply.
